Gabriela Garcia’s just-released debut novel, Of Women and Salt, addresses immigration.

But it’s not “the” immigration novel, she is quick to both say in interviews and to depict through her writing.

The novel follows the lives of five generations of mothers and daughters, who call various countries — Cuba, El Salvador, the United States — home.

Garcia spoke about the experiences that inspired the novel and the messages she hopes it conveys in interviews with the Los Angeles Times (which called it “everything American Dirt wasn’t”) and Vogue magazine.
