Many of us experienced a sense of isolation in the past year-plus, thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic and associated lockdowns.
But, with all due respect, that sense of loneliness was nothing compared to what Ian Manuel has lived through.
Manuel spent twenty-six years in prison — much of that in solitary confinement — for shooting a woman during a robbery attempt when he was a teenager.
His victim survived — and so did he.
In an interview with Weekend Edition’s Scott Simon, Manuel credits much of that to the power of the written word.
He began writing poetry while in prison and has continued on to the memoir arena, with My Time Will Come: A Memoir of Crime, Punishment, Hope, and Redemption having been released earlier this month.
