Sometimes the characters of what was intended to be a standalone book make a persuasive case for a whole series about them.

Other times, authors decide in advance that their story warrants more than a single novel.

In the case of the latter, the series will be best served if the author can decide on some big-picture ideas and themes before they plunge into writing.

C.S. Lakin has identified several strategies for writing a successful series in which each book is connected by more than a main character (i.e., more Harry Potter than Hercule Poirot) and shared them on her Live Write Thrive blog.
