Joanna Penn and Orna Ross want to dispel a few myths about the idea of researching your fiction.
First of all, they say, it won’t cause you to accidentally plagiarize or absorb clichés – in fact, it has the opposite effect; it alerts you to what’s already been done.
It also won’t stifle your creative process; rather, it can enhance it by providing you with the details and knowledge necessary to complete a particular scene or situation.
Still skeptical? Penn and Ross explain how this has been true for them and share their preferred strategies for researching both fiction and nonfiction books in an episode of the Alliance of Independent Authors podcast.
