Yusef Salaam has been through hell, as one of the Exonerated Five (formerly known as the Central Park Five).

So he’s intimately acquainted with injustice — and also with how to emotionally recover from it.

His memoir, Better, Not Bitter, details his journey from wrongly vilified teen to freed man to prison reform activist.

"You have to be able to forgive so that you can cut yourself from the ball and chain that's holding you back," he told Fresh Air’s Terry Gross. 

"It has nothing to do with the individual who harmed you, but everything to do with yourself."
