At first, author Alyson Gerber found writing middle grade fiction to be rather easy.

Her own trauma from the middle-school years was still affecting her in her twenties, unfortunately, so she didn’t have to think hard to remember what it was like to be in early adolescence.

But, she says, you don’t have to rely solely on your own middle-school years — good news for those of us who buried the memories away, and good advice for authors like her who want to expand the stories they’re telling.
