Whether you’re a passionate fan of romance now or speed past it at any store, you can picture the classic romance-novel cover.

Emphasis on classic — torn clothing and flowing locks aren’t nearly as prevalent as they used to be.

And that’s perhaps a relief to podcast producer Katie Mingle, whose mother recently wrote and published a romance novel; more recent covers (and novels) include more consent and diversity than in the early years of the genre.

It also inspired Mingle and the podcasters on 99 Percent Invisible to track romance’s progression from the literal bodice-rippers of the 1970s to the more diverse – in terms of characters and their journeys — stories of today.

You can read an article adapted from the episode “The Clinch” or listen to it in its entirety on the 99 Percent Invisible podcast.
