Two of Nigeria’s most prominent writers seem to have escalated their differences into a full-blown internet feud.
NPR has a comprehensive look into the disagreement between Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (Americanah and Half of a Yellow Sun) and Akwaeke Emezi (The Death of Vivek Oji and Dear Senthuran: A Black Spirit Memoir).
Over the past few years, the two have tangled over comments Adichie made about trans women.
Emezi, who identifies as nonbinary and uses the pronouns they/them, has been critical of Adichie’s views.
But, to complicate matters, Emezi was a participant in one of Adichie’s writing workshops.
And so that brings us to Tuesday’s escalation of the drama — that was the day upon which Adichie published a lengthy essay on her website, titled "It Is Obscene," that criticizes Emezi and another writer (neither is identified by name) over their behavior during and after this writing workshop.
So, to recap: NPR covers the years of public back-and-forth between Adichie and Emezi, including the latter’s reaction to “It Is Obscene.”
