Book coach Susan DeFreitas typically sees three different launching points for novels: with a character, with a plot or story concept, or with a theme.
She isn’t going to advocate for one over the others, but she is going to explore the strengths and weaknesses that she sees pop up in each case.
DeFreitas’s first post in the series looks at stories that begin with a character.
Some of the advantages to this route is that readers find it easy to connect with the main character and to identify whose story it is.
But, DeFreitas says, sometimes this approach gives writers plot problems or tempts them to provide too many points of view.
