It’s easy to conflate pacing with plot-development speed in a novel.

Donald Maass is here (okay, he's at Writer Unboxed) to set the record straight.

He shares a few perfectly paced passages from literature to show how you can pace a scene quickly without using rapid-fire action.

Essentially, you want to keep ahead of your readers — don’t let them predict what you’re going to say before you actually say it, so that their eyes yearn to skip ahead.
