Remember when dystopia was *the* genre in literature, especially young adult?

We know some of you are groaning at the memories and giving thanks that trends have changed.

And it’s easy to assume that the shift came about because of oversaturation … but culture writer Bashirat Oladele says it’s more complicated than that.

Yes, the piling-on from authors and then Hollywood certainly didn’t help.

But some of the other contributing factors include how the genre never evolved beyond the early successes and how even those successful iterations missed the mark on a few plot considerations.
