Just as you can boil down most stories into a handful of basic plots, so too can you narrow down characters into a selection of archetypes.

Author Jason Hamilton describes eleven basic character roles — with examples in addition to their functions — and the four types of characters (again, with examples augmenting the definitions) in a post for the Kindlepreneur.

Hamilton concludes with a reminder that the roles can overlap or simply be unfilled, but that a variety of roles and types will greatly benefit your novel.
