We caught up on the saga of the fake Cormac McCarthy Twitter account and realized we’d missed the previous chapter.

As you may remember, a tweet from it went viral, because Twitter had marked the account as verified.

Almost as viral was the schadenfreude of bookworms when Twitter had to admit it wrongly verified the account.

What we missed: that Twitter then suspended it.

And what we learned now: that the user behind it is Daniel Watts, “a free speech lawyer, comedic playwright, Youtuber, and long-shot candidate for California governor,” per Literary Hub.

Watts says he never even sought Twitter’s verification for @CormacMcCrthy and theorizes that this is why Twitter suspended the account he believes was obviously a parody one — that the company was embarrassed that it tricked itself, rather than falling for a prank.
