A popular Instagram account has changed its name over similarities to a bestselling book.

Author Ijeoma Oluo released the book So You Want to Talk About Race in 2018; it became a bestseller and was a popular inclusion on social-justice reading lists last year.

Also popular last year, but much newer than Oluo’s book: the Instagram account formerly known as @soyouwanttotalkabout (now @so.informed).

Oluo said she reached out to the account in 2020 after a number of people either thought it was her account or thought she was being taken advantage of.

At that time, the account added a small disclaimer to indicate it wasn’t associated with Oluo.

But it wasn’t until this August — when the account drew attention for using a racial slur in an image — that the calls to distinguish the two grew louder.

Literary Hub has a complete timeline of So You Want to Talk About Race, the book, and @so.informed, the Instagram account whose book deal is now on “pause” and whose creator has apologized for the harm she caused.
