Nicaraguan prosecutors have ordered the arrest of award-winning writer Sergio Ramírez.
The BBC reported late last week that the author, who left Nicaragua in June, is accused of inciting hatred and conspiring to destabilize the country.
Ramírez actually served as vice president during Daniel Ortega’s first term as president, but has been an outspoken critic of Ortega and his party since the mid-1990s.
According to the Associated Press, Ramírez believes the charges are related to his latest novel, Tongolele no sabía bailar, which depicts Ortega’s crackdown on protesters in April 2018.
In an appearance Monday in Mexico, the author thanked his supporters and described his situation as a forced exile and as one of the toughest circumstances to be in.
