Celebrity book clubs have released their picks for September 2021. (Yes, we know we're ... um ... a bit late this month.)
Reese Witherspoon selected L.A. Weather, by María Amparo Escandón.
The novel uses California’s droughts and wildfires to underscore the family tension among the Alvarados — father Oscar, mother Keila, and grown daughters Claudia, Olivia, and Patricia.
"Nothing will prepare you for how this story begins," Witherspoon said of the book. "It's unconventional and so real, I felt deeply connected to these characters and clung to their beautiful moments of hope and togetherness."
Jenna Bush Hager picked Beautiful Country, by Qian Julie Wang.
Wang’s memoir describes her family’s less-than-perfect immigration story; her parents, once professors in China, must take exhausting and low-paying jobs in a sweatshop in New York City, causing no end of strain on them and their young daughter.
“It is one of those remarkable books that stays with you long after you’ve finished reading it,” Hager said in announcing her Read With Jenna book club pick.
Good Morning America chose Several People Are Typing, by Calvin Kasulke.
This satirical novel follows Gerald, whose consciousness has been uploaded into his employer’s Slack channels, on his quest to recover his physical body.
You can read an excerpt of Several People Are Typing in GMA's announcement of its choice.
