Léopold Sédar Senghor, the first man elected as president of Senegal after its independence, was born on this day in 1906.

Senghor is known for even more than that accomplishment, though.

As Literary Hub points out, he was among the leaders of Négritude — an anti-colonial cultural and political movement — and one of the first writers to describe the African experience in a European language.

Lit Hub links to four of Senghor’s poems, if you’re curious about his work.
