Sally Rooney has turned down a translation offer from an Israeli-based publishing house because of her stance on the Israel-Palestine conflict.

The Guardian reports that the author’s statement expressed pride in having her first two novels available in Hebrew and explained why Beautiful World, Where Are You wouldn’t be joining them.

Two reports earlier this year “confirmed what Palestinian human rights groups have long been saying: Israel’s system of racial domination and segregation against Palestinians meets the definition of apartheid under international law,” Rooney wrote.

She went on to acknowledge that Israel isn’t the only country accused of human rights abuse and said that in this case, she was responding to calls from Palestinian groups and their advocates to take action.
