Releasing a book is a labor of love, with emphasis on the “labor” part.

But author, editor, and coach Jessica Conoley has a trick for you to try during the parts of the progress that seem to bog you down.

Her suggestion is to think of yourself as having an analytical dial or lever — not an on-or-off switch, but something that can increase or decrease gradually.

In certain parts of the writing process, such as the drafting phase, you’ll want to imagine that the analytical dial is turned fairly low, so that you can put down as many words as possible.

When you research or revise, though, crank that dial way up.

Conoley gives a thorough explanation of her analyzer switch technique in a guest post for Jane Friedman’s blog.
