The fact that a judge dismissed the convictions of two men in Malcolm X’s assassination, decades after the fact, has likely caught the attention of many of us in the US.

But it’s particularly relevant to author Tamara Payne.

Payne finished writing her father’s biography of the slain civil rights activist, and that book — The Dead Are Arising: The Life of Malcolm X — would go on to win the Pulitzer Prize in nonfiction this year.

So NPR’s A Martinez naturally thought to reach out to Payne, in the wake of the exonerations of Muhammad Aziz and Khalil Islam.

Payne provides a historical context for Malcolm X’s murder and insights into the research that she and her father did for The Dead Are Arising in that conversation, which you can read on NPR’s website or listen to below.
