A Christmas Carol is widely embraced as a heartwarming tale, perfect for the holiday season.

It shouldn’t be seen that way, however, says Robyn Vinter in the Guardian.

Citing a Charles Dickens scholar, she says the author intended it as a criticism of the attitude of the time that poor people were a problem to be dealt with, rather than humans who needed compassion and assistance.

Dickens’ disgust with that belief is understandable, given his hardscrabble upbringing.

So if you don’t see Vinter and us as Ebenezer Scrooges for calling attention to the political side of A Christmas Carol, head over to the Guardian for a greater analysis of the details.
