The real meaning of "A Christmas Carol"

A Christmas Carol is widely embraced as a heartwarming tale, perfect for the holiday season.

It shouldn’t be seen that way, however, says Robyn Vinter in the Guardian.

Citing a Charles Dickens scholar, she says the author intended it as a criticism of the attitude of the time that poor people were a problem to be dealt with, rather than humans who needed compassion and assistance.

Dickens’ disgust with that belief is understandable, given his hardscrabble upbringing.
