We thought we were done sharing word-of-the-year lists — but we were wrong.

In our defense, though, the American Dialect Society just recently finalized its choice for 2021.

The overall winner, announced Friday, was “insurrection,” but there are a number of other categories that yielded individual winners.

For example, “hard pants” was deemed the most useful word of the year, “#FreeBritney” was the digital word of the year, and “boosted” was the pandemic-related word of the year.

The ADS put out a press release with all of the word of the year winners and runners-up by category, as well as vote totals for each.

On a perhaps more cheerful and less depressing note, Mental Floss shared the thirteen most mispronounced words of 2021, according to Babbel.
