How causation works in character-driven stories

The student became the teacher, in a way, when author and developmental editor Harrison Demchick gave a presentation about cause and effect in narrative fiction.

An audience member inquired about how the principles should play out in genres that are less action-oriented.

And so Demchick decided to put together some thoughts on using character as plot, incorporating happenstance, and balancing nonlinear storytelling.
