The long saga of an illustrated version of Ulysses has come to an end.

The Spanish artist Eduardo Arroyo had been inspired to undertake the project as a way to mark the fiftieth anniversary of James Joyce's death, reports the New York Times.

That was in 1991, though, when Ulysses was still under control of the Joyce estate — which opposed the idea.

A decade ago, when the copyright expired, Arroyo was able to resume the project as he intended, and last month Ulysses: An Illustrated Edition officially hit shelves.

(But unfortunately ... Arroyo died in 2018.)

You can read an overarching history of illustrations and Ulysses in the NY Times.
