When we learn about dramatic crimes, whether past or present, we can sometimes lose sight of the victims in favor of hearing the perpetrator's story.

That's been the case (no pun intended) in the example of the mysterious manuscript thief, now alleged to be Simon & Schuster UK employee Filippo Bernardini. (Bernardini has pled not guilty to the charges filed against him.)

One of the authors that the thief targeted — successfully — is debut novelist Peter C. Baker.

It didn't take Baker very long to realized he'd been had, and he's had plenty of time to analyze how it all happened and what it revealed about himself.

Baker tells his story of falling for a literary scam in The New Yorker.
