The American Library Association shared its list of 2021’s most frequently challenged books this morning.

The group recorded 729 challenges of 1,597 different books that year, a huge increase from the pandemic-affected 2020 (156) and 2019 (377) and a record since the ALA began tracking challenges in 2000.

And yet, the ALA found in a recent survey, over 7 in 10 voters oppose efforts to remove books from public libraries — underscoring that it's a vocal minority powering these challenges.

Here are the ten most frequently targeted books.

1. Gender Queer, by Maia Kobabe.

2. Lawn Boy, by Jonathan Evison.

3. All Boys Aren't Blue, by George M. Johnson.

4. Out of Darkness, by Ashley Hope Perez.

5. The Hate U Give, by Angie Thomas.

6. The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, by Sherman Alexie.

7. Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, by Jesse Andrews.

8. The Bluest Eye, by Toni Morrison.

9. This Book is Gay, by Juno Dawson.

10. Beyond Magenta, by Susan Kuklin.
