Congratulations are in order for a number of authors this morning.

The Alliance of Independent Authors co-hosted a ten-word story competition during this year's Self-Publishing Advice Mini-Con.

Its winner has been revealed as Callie Browning, whose incredibly brief work you can read on ALLi's blog.

The Los Angeles Times Book Prize winners have also been announced.

The awards are, in organizers' words, "dedicated to discovering new voices."

This year's winners:

  • Art Seidenbaum Award for First Fiction: Brood, by Jackie Polzin

  • Biography: Burning Boy: The Life and Work of Stephen Crane, by Paul Auster

  • Christopher Isherwood Prize for Autobiographical Prose: Real Estate: A Living Autobiography, by Deborah Levy

  • Current Interest: Midnight in Washington: How We Almost Lost Our Democracy and Still Could, by Adam Schiff

  • Fiction: In the Company of Men, by Véronique Tadjo

  • Graphic Novel/Comics: No One Else, by R. Kikuo Johnson

  • History: Cuba: An American History, by Ada Ferrer 

  • Mystery/Thriller: The Turnout, by Megan Abbott

  • Poetry: frank: sonnets, by Diane Seuss

  • Ray Bradbury Prize for Science Fiction, Fantasy & Speculative Fiction: Spirits Abroad: Stories, by Zen Cho

  • Science & Technology: The Disordered Cosmos: A Journey into Dark Matter, Spacetime, and Dreams Deferred, by Dr. Chanda Prescod-Weinstein

  • Young Adult Literature: A Sitting in St. James, by Rita Williams-Garcia
