Mother's Day 2022 is now in the books, so it seems safe and not insensitive to share writing advice about complicated family relationships.

Author Juliet Blackwell is lucky in that her relationships with her mother and with her own child are loving and healthy.

But that isn't the case for everyone — and even the best relationships aren't without some complexity or nuance.

So here are Blackwell's top three tips for how to explore the mother-child relationship in fiction and deepen your characters, even if this bond isn't the central point of your novel.
