Congratulations are in order to author Geetanjali Shree and translator Daisy Rockwell, who have made International Booker Prize history.

Shree's novel Tomb of Sand has become the first novel originally written in Hindi — or in any Indian language — to win the prize. (It's also her first to be published in the UK.)

Shree and Rockwell will split the £50,000 (about $63,100) prize.

The novel follows an eighty-year-old widow who travels to Pakistan as a way to both emerge from her depression over losing her husband and to confront her experiences with Partition.

The judging panel's chair told the Guardian that Tomb of Sand is "enormously engaging and charming and funny and light, despite the various subjects it’s dealing with."

And the Guardian also nabbed an interview with Shree and Rockwell, fresh off their victory.
