It can be enough of a struggle to write a realistic-feeling human character, let alone a living being that doesn't actually exist in real life.

There is, however, at least one rule for fantasy creatures (no matter which genre they appear in): they need to have some sort of purpose for your story.

Beyond that, says Dave Chesson, they can take on any number of shapes.

But to help guide your creative process, he offers six strategies for creating a fantasy character on his Kindlepreneur blog.
