Last Friday, we fully expected to see book-sales headlines to feature Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale.
And while it and its sequel, The Testaments, continue to sell well, the story from Publishers Weekly is about the nonfiction that fits the moment.
Some works, like Annie Ernaux’s 2001 memoir, Happening, and Robin Marty’s 2021 The New Handbook for a Post-Roe America (an update from 2019), saw sales spikes and reprint requests.
Other works came out at just the right moment, like Lauren Rankin’s Bodies on the Line: At the Front Lines of the Fight to Protect Abortion in America (released in April), or were even moved up to capitalize on the fresh interest, like Becca Andrews's No Choice: The Destruction of Roe v. Wade and the Fight to Protect a Fundamental American Right (coming out this October instead of next year).
