A letter in an author's own hand is an exciting auction item as it is.

But when that author is J.R.R. Tolkien?

And when that author is discussing the inspiration for a classic trilogy?

The starting bid for such an item being $5,000 does seem a little low (though still not in everyone's budget).

Literary Hub transcribed the letter from Tolkien to a fan, dated April 12, 1956, and also linked to the auction site's listing where you can read it in Tolkien's handwriting.

Bidding will go on for another eight days.
