The man accused of stabbing author Salman Rushdie at an event last week has entered a not-guilty plea in the attack.

Hadi Matar was indicted earlier this week on charges of second-degree attempted murder and second-degree assault, which carry penalties of up to twenty-five and seven years in prison, respectively, reports CNN.

Matar was ordered to surrender firearms and will be held without bail.

The prosecutor in the case shared more information on Matar's actions leading up to the stabbing, but a motive has yet to be shared.

Rushdie is known for Midnight's ChildrenQuichotte, and The Satanic Verses, the latter of which was viewed as blasphemous by some Muslims.

It was also the impetus for Iran's late leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini to issue a formal edict seeking Rushdie's death.

The author spent years in hiding and has received death threats for decades.
