On this day in 1891, author Herman Melville died.

He was seventy-two years old but hadn't published a book in over three decades, so it appears that journalistic interest in him was pretty low.

Literary Hub shares the New York Times's first obituary for the Moby Dick author, in its entirety, to underscore the indifference toward him.
