Sherlock Holmes graduated from magazine appearances to his very own book — The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes — on this day in 1892.

In honor of the occasion, here's an article that begins with a letter ostensibly written by the famous sleuth (whose handwriting bears an uncanny resemblance to that of his creator, Arthur Conan Doyle) as his death quickly approaches.

But from that item, housed in Indiana University's Lilly Library, the article takes a trip into the world of Sherlock Holmes fans known for "Playing the Game" — that is, behaving as though Sherlock Holmes and Watson were real folks, served by their literary agent, Doyle — and forming social clubs like the Baker Street Irregulars and Baker Street Babes.
