Writer Mike Davis has died

Mike Davis, known for his books and essays that sometimes took unpopular positions, has died at the age of seventy-six.

That work, including Ecology of Fear and the bestseller City of Quartz, drew inspiration from his activism for labor, the environment, and social justice, notes NPR in its obituary.

But while he warned of pandemics and environmental disasters well before he had a supportive audience, he didn't care for being depicted as a "prophet of doom."

"Listen carefully to the quiet, profound people who have lost everything but their dignity. Cultivate the generosity of the 'we,'" he wrote in his 2012 ode to compassion, Be Realistic: Demand the Impossible.
