In other news of incredibly old writing ... the New York Times previewed a book on one specific example a few weeks ago.

The modern book in question is Códice Maya de México: Understanding the Oldest Surviving Book of the Americas; its topic, the fragments of a Mayan codex from 1100 that escaped being destroyed by the invading Spanish.
