Congratulations to the 2022 winners of the National Book Award!
In addition to honoring these books and their authors (and translators), the ceremony included two lifetime achievement awards.
Art Spiegelman, author of the Holocaust memoir Maus, and Tracie D. Hall, the first African American woman to serve as the American Library Association's executive director, were honored for their contributions to the world of literature.
Fiction: The Rabbit Hutch, by Tess Gunty
Nonfiction: South to America: A Journey Below the Mason-Dixon to Understand the Soul of a Nation, by Imani Perry
Poetry: Punks: New & Selected Poems, by John Keene
Translated literature: Seven Empty Houses, written by Samanta Schweblin and translated from the Spanish by Megan McDowell
Young people's literature: All My Rage, by Sabaa Tahi
The winners each received $10,000.
The Associated Press reports that many of the honorees called attention to current strife in the world, from Hall commenting on the recent book-ban wave to Spiegelman and Perry referencing the suffering their ancestors endured in the Holocaust and slavery era and Tahir applauding her "Muslim sisters" protesting oppression abroad.
