'Tis the season when many readers begin eyeing their yearly total of books consumed.

The Guardian's Susie Mesure is among them ... but she's ready to make a slight change.

The self-described "archetypal impatient reader" recently found herself intrigued by the advice of author and professor Yiyun Li.

Li often tells her creative writing students that there's power in reading slowly — and she walks that talk, taking up three weeks to finish a novel.
