Author Jason Reynolds is the first person ever to serve three years as national ambassador for young people's literature ... but today is his last day on that job.

The author of All American Boys and Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You took the position in 2020, meaning that the coronavirus pandemic forced much of his tenure to take place online.

So at the end of his original two-year term, he asked for another year.

In total, he visited about 16,000 students at 47 schools across 25 states.

Reynolds discussed the reasons he's passionate about being an ambassador for literature and the challenges facing young potential readers with NPR; you can read a transcript of the conversation or listen to it.
