A new year means new creative works that have left copyright and entered the public domain.

As 2022 wound down, NPR reported on some of the notable songs, books, and movies from 1927 that are now fair game for anyone to use.

Among them: Irving Berlin's "Puttin' On The Ritz"; Virginia Woolf's To the Lighthouse, Arthur Conan Doyle's The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes, and Franklin W. Dixon's The Tower Treasure (the first Hardy Boys book); and The Jazz Singer, the first movie to feature spoken words.

Hear more from Jennifer Jenkins, director of Duke University's Center for the Study of the Public Domain, about the benefits of having material in the public domain on NPR's website — and check out her own post about Public Domain Day 2023.
