A new year means new creative works that have left copyright and entered the public domain.
As 2022 wound down, NPR reported on some of the notable songs, books, and movies from 1927 that are now fair game for anyone to use.
Among them: Irving Berlin's "Puttin' On The Ritz"; Virginia Woolf's To the Lighthouse, Arthur Conan Doyle's The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes, and Franklin W. Dixon's The Tower Treasure (the first Hardy Boys book); and The Jazz Singer, the first movie to feature spoken words.
