A Florida school district canceled a production of a play at a high school this week, calling it "inappropriate."

The subject of the play? Censorship.

NPR reports that PEN America, The National Coalition Against Censorship, and the Dramatists Legal Defense Fund have all issued a statement calling on Duval County Public Schools to rescind its decision.

The play, Indecent by Paula Vogel, tells the story of controversy surrounding a play that was a hit in Europe — but was deemed obscene after it was performed on Broadway.

School officials complained about a love scene between women, but the free-speech groups noted that other plays performed by the school — RENT and Chicago — included "as much, if not more, 'sexual dialogue' as is conveyed in Indecent."

A school official reiterated its stance that the show contained material that is "inappropriate" for both performers and the audience, in a response to NPR's request for comment.
