If you went to elementary school in the 1990s, there's no way you won't recognize this book, even if you didn't read it yourself ...

And The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales, by Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith, is still going strong, says NPR's Samantha Balaban.

She checked in with the authors thirty-some years after their groundbreaking fairy-tale parody and its predecessor, The True Story of the Three Little Pigs (told from the big bad wolf's perspective), hit shelves.

They were happy to reminisce about how they found one another and brought what became an award-winning (and, sometimes, controversial) collection to fruition.

You can read the flashback to The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales on NPR's website, which also features audio.
