Nobel Prize-winning author Kenzaburo Oe has died

Nobel Prize-winning author Kenzaburo Oe has died.

His publisher told CNN that Oe died March 3 at age eighty-eight of old age.

Oe wrote more than forty novel and short-story collections over the course of his career, described thoroughly in his New York Times obituary.

He caught literary attention during his college years for a short story and published his first novel, Nip the Buds, Shoot the Kids, shortly afterwards.

It wasn't until his son was born with a severe medical condition, though, that his writing gained broader and constant acclaim.

Two novels from that period, A Personal Matter and The Silent Cry, were heavily influenced by his son's plight and by the consequences of atomic bombs.

Oe became the second Japanese writer to receive a Nobel in 1994.
