Having a hobby solely for the pleasure it brings you is, of course, absolutely a worthwhile, valuable endeavor.

But if you're wired like Kristine Kathryn Rusch, you might find yourself torn between the sense that you should be writing whenever you can and the sense that you'd like to take a foreign language class, dabble in another art form, etc.

Rusch has great news, though: there's plenty of evidence to support the statement that it's better for you not to spend all your mental energy on writing.
