The publishing experts we follow have plenty of craft advice to offer.

Here are the ones that we thought were can't-miss for our authors:

  • How to write compelling family in fiction: Journalist Carolyn Jack explores how to balance the urge to find inspiration from your own life with respecting your loved ones' privacy (Writer's Digest).

  • How to blend structure and spontaneity: Authors who don't necessarily plan their novels out in minute detail — but who nevertheless don't all embrace the "pantser" label — share their personal road maps for their first drafts (Alliance of Independent Authors).

  • Overcoming middle-book syndrome in trilogies: Author Chloe Gong thinks that approaching the second novel in her trilogy as a widening of a triangle, rather than the bridge connecting two rectangles, helped her avoid having a sagging middle to her series (Writer's Digest).

  • A word about dedications: Sophie Masson traces the history of book dedications and analyzes some of the purposes that they can serve, if you choose to include them (Writer Unboxed).
