Today we're interviewing author Lynette Eason, who writes romantic suspense.
Eason's books have appeared on the USA TODAY, Publishers Weekly, CBA, ECPA, and Parable bestseller lists, and she has won numerous awards including the Carol, the Selah, the Golden Scroll, and more.
Additionally, her novel Her Stolen Past was made into a movie for the Lifetime Movie Network.
Her next novel, Serial Burn, comes out January 2025.
SADYE: How did you come to see yourself as a writer, and what inspired you to seek publication?
LYNETTE: You know, it's funny — I never started out thinking "I'm going to be a writer."
I was actually teaching at a school, but I've always loved reading suspense novels. But I was/am a voracious reader, always with a book in my hand or my purse or backpack.
And while I loved the plot and characters in most of the stories I read, I did NOT like the explicit sex scenes and I was like, I guess if I’m going to read a story I like, I’m just going to have to write it. So I did.
SADYE: Tell us something about your writing process that’s unusual or that you haven’t revealed before.
LYNETTE: I call myself a linear writer. Like, I start with chapter one and go until I’m done. Writing scenes out of order simply doesn’t work for me. Until it does. LOL!
If I get stuck on something and can’t figure out a character or where I need to take the story, I will jump ahead and just write a scene.
I know that might sound crazy, but if I have a really intense action sequence or confrontation burning in my mind, I'll write it and see if that shakes something loose, allowing me to go back to the “stuck place”.
SADYE: Which of your characters would you most and least like to become romantically involved with?
LYNETTE: Oh my goodness, LOL! Well, since we're being honest, I'd probably say Brady St. John — he's that perfect combination of strong protector but also gentle spirit. A real man who knows who he is and knows how to treat a woman. He’s also strong in his faith and not afraid to show it.
Least like? Probably any of my villains! I try to make them complex, but they're still not exactly dating material!
SADYE: What have been the most surprising, rewarding, and challenging parts of your writing career?
LYNETTE: Most surprising has been how God has used these stories to touch people's lives in ways I never expected.
Most rewarding is hearing from readers who've found hope or renewed faith through my books.
I get a few emails a month telling me how my stories got them through their latest chemo treatment or how their teen who never liked to read is now going through all of my backlist. That kind of thing makes all the headaches that come with writing worth it.
Most challenging? Keeping the suspense fresh and exciting while staying true to my faith message. Sometimes I feel like I’ve written everything I have in me. Like I don’t think I can come up with one more fresh, unique story, but then God gives it to me and off we go.
SADYE: What period of history would you most like to travel back to / what historical figure would you most like to meet, and why?
LYNETTE: I'd love to meet Corrie Ten Boom. Her unwavering faith in the face of such adversity during World War II is incredibly inspiring.
That was such a horrific time period in our world, but the heroic actions of many make it one that brings us back over and over to cheer on those brave souls.
Plus, as someone who writes about brave women facing dangerous situations, I'd love to hear firsthand about her experiences helping others while trusting in God's protection.
