The publishing experts we follow have plenty of craft and process advice to offer.

Here are the ones that we thought were can't-miss for our authors:

  • How readers react to reactions: Donald Maass explains how to set your reader up so that they feel more than just a passing empathy for your characters (Writer Unboxed).

  • Ease your reader over the bridge of a sudden change: Kathryn Craft doesn't want you (or any author she'll read) to beat her over the head with an explanation of a character's change of heart, but you do need to sprinkle some seeds in so that she and your readers will believe it (Writer Unboxed).

  • Poetry with Abi Pollakoff: Joanna Penn interviews a poet about language, line breaks, and punctuation in poetry, along with other craft techniques that can apply to prose writing, too (The Creative Penn).

  • How to collapse narrative distance to get emotion on the page: Alex Van Tol provides examples of passages in which the reader feels the characters' grief, regret, and anxiety keenly and identifies the methods used to accomplish this (Jane Friedman).

  • How to write a story: Kevin J. Duncan lays out the seven basic steps to write a great story (Kindlepreneur).
