The publishing experts we follow have plenty of craft and creative process advice to offer.

Here are the ones that we thought were can't-miss for our authors:

  • The fairy tale heroine's journey: Kate Farrell shares a three-part structure that highlights the unique challenges a female protagonist faces in myths and fairy tales (Women Writers, Women's Books).

  • Character building: Dave King describes a number of techniques for depicting a character living in a less-enlightened time or place who functions within the racism, misogyny, or any other oppressive system ... and who still nudges readers to connect with and root for them (Writer Unboxed).

  • How much does your protagonist really need to do?: Barbara Linn Probst has encountered a few novels lately in which the protagonist's inaction or restraint is actually key to the plot and their personal development, and she explores why it works in certain cases (Writer Unboxed).
