  • Former President Barack Obama released his summer reading list, as is tradition, along with the news that the Obama Presidential Center — opening next year — will have a new branch of the Chicago Public Library on site (Book Riot).

  • Gérard Chaliand, who wrote extensively on geopolitics, revolutions in the developing world, and terrorism in some forty books, died August 20 at age ninety-one (The New York Times).

  • Read "Run for Your Life,” from Turn to Stone by Emily Meg Weinstein; this memoir comes out September 2 (Electric Literature).
